I Love Freeware, I love Portable Application.

  • image view and edit
    • Picasa. Cool photo viewing & editing software from Google.
    • Neo Imaging, image editing tool, Chinese edition only.
    • GIMP / GIMPShop, replacement of Photoshop.
  • MindMapping
    • MindManager Pro is cool & powerful mindmapping software, but too expensive.
    • So I use FreeMind which is open source and free.
    • XMind Portable is also a good choice.

  • Office
    • Google Docs is cool and it can take the place of Microsoft Office some times. I can edit documents together with my partners and share with them. The weakness of online software is the terrible network and the great firewall of China. The SSL connecting has been blocked by great firewall.
    • OpenOffice.org is freeware based on Java.
    • Microsoft Office (2003/2007) is very popular in China, but most people, most companies use it without copyright. If you like Microsoft Office but just using word, excel and powerpoint, WPS Office Chinese Edition by Kingsoft can be a good replacement. It is free for personal & non-business usage.
  • Explorer
    • FireFox is powerful with so many add-ons. The only weakness is the terrible start speed.
    • Chrome is faster. Maybe Chrome will take the place of FireFox in the future when more and more extensive in supported.
    • IE8 for taobao, alipay and Internet Bank only. Sucks all Chinese Internet Bank and Alipay, we can’t use FireFox or Chrome for this websites.
  • Email
    • Gmail / Google Apps Mail for my own domain.
    • I use Email clients, such as OutLook Express / Foxmail / OutLook / Thunderbird from 2002, and finally moved to web based Gmail in 2005. Gmail is powerful, faster, Smarter, easy to manage and less spam.
  • Print Screen
    • PicPick Portable is smart and free , just download and unzip to anywhere in your hard disk.
  • PDF
  • Downloading tools.
    • Down ThemAll! for firefox is my default downloading tools.
    • eMule, share software more than downloading tools.
    • xunlei is fast, but too many ads I hat.
    • the classic Flashget version 1.7.3 with no ads.
  • FTP
  • IM
    • I love Google Talk as a IM and Gmail notifier, but few of my friends use it.
    • QQ is the most populor IM in China. Tens of milliam Chinese use it including my family, my partners, my clients. I use non-ads TM version.
    • Windows Live Messenger is also very popular in China. I hope I can chat with WML users with Google Talk in the future. You can remove the ad with MSN Shell.
    • Fetion for free SMS, maybe LibFetion is better.
    • The chatting room by Sina UC is good.
    • Skype for online VoIP and cheap world call. Don’t use TOM Skype, The big brother is watching you. Use the official Skype.
    • Wangwang for commanication with Taobao shop owners and Alibaba users.
  • Audio & Video
  • Burning
  • AntiVirus
    • find AntiVirus here. Remember, don’t use any Chinese AntiVirus.
  • Sync and online backup
    • DropBox supply 2G space for free users, and can be increasing to 5G by invite new user. I use DropBox for half a year, syncing files from my laptop and my desktop, sharing files with my partner. DropBox support only one folder, that is the only weakness.
    • Live Mesh by Microsoft, 5G free space, worth trying, supporting different folders.
    • You can also try SugarSync and Syncplicity, they are similar to Dropbox.
    • Mozy is nice online backup tools. They have more than 1 million users. And Mozy supplies 2G space for free users and unlimited backup for one PC only 4.95$ per month.
  • Online Disk
  • notepad
  • Type Chinese
  • SSH
  • VNC
